Art, Design and Technology
We are artists.
We will provide high quality resources that allow children to explore and remember a range of artists and techniques to inspire, invent and create our own works of Art and Design. Children will think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding to contribute to the culture and creativity of our school.
Our Art and Design curriculum has been designed to allow children to develop knowledge and skills that progress as they move through their education. Art is a universal language that allows children to explore and develop their ideas and emotions, despite any barriers they may be facing. The artistic process is one of creativity and nurture – allowing children to explore and experiment with their creativity, all whilst nurturing their soul. Art stimulates both sides of the brain, increasing the capacity for concentration, pattern-spotting and memory as well as building upon social skills, self-esteem and self-love.
At the core of Art and Design at Southborough is an opportunity for children to develop a true enjoyment of and engagement with the creative arts, through topics that interest and inspire them. Art and Design will be linked to our Harmony Curriculum, and allow children to explore the links art has to all other subjects and wider aspect of our lives as a whole. Children will have the opportunities to explore artists from a diverse range of backgrounds and be inspired to create their own responses.
Every year group will have opportunities to experiment with drawing, painting, printing, textiles/collage and 3D form. The curriculum is progressive and builds upon prior knowledge and skills as they move throughout the school, developing mastery by the time they reach the end of Key Stage 2.
Every child will have a sketchbook that they begin in Year 1 and take with them as they progress through their school life, so they can look back and be proud of their continuing journey as an artist.
Design and Technology encourages children to learn and think creatively to solve problems both as individuals and as members of a team. At Southborough Primary, we encourage children to use their creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values.
As D&T is within our Harmony curriculum, we aim to, wherever possible, link work to other disciplines such as science, computing and art. The children are also given opportunities to reflect upon and evaluate past and present design technology. They investigate its uses, its effectiveness and are also encouraged to become innovators and risk-takers.
Key skills and knowledge for Design and Technology have been mapped across the school to ensure progression between year groups. The context for the children’s work in Design and Technology is also well considered and linked to the Harmony principle of study. Design and Technology lessons may be weekly or taught as a block if required, so that children’s learning is focused throughout each unit of work.
Our D&T curriculum provides children with opportunities to:
- Research
- Represent their ideas
- Explore and investigate
- Develop their ideas
- Make a product
- Evaluate their finished work
Children are also able to experience a wide range of media including textiles, food technology, sheet and framework materials; and through this, children develop a wide range of practical life skills, vocabulary and resilience.
